SuDS

For UK developers, understanding sustainable drainage regulations is now a must. National planning policy requires SuDS in all major developments to manage surface water on-site, with local authorities often imposing stricter standards.

In London, the planning framework sets ambitious targets, requiring developments to achieve greenfield runoff rates and prioritise natural infiltration methods. Essex and Norfolk each have their own design guides, reinforcing the need for site-specific solutions.

Government plans to make SuDS mandatory for most new developments will further standardise requirements, introducing a consistent approval process under Schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act.

Developers can benefit by engaging drainage consultants early, designing with SuDS components from the outset, and keeping abreast of regional variations in policy. This reduces approval delays, ensures compliance, and future-proofs projects against tightening environmental standards.
