Recently, we spotted a classic example of missed SuDS potential near our office - and it’s exactly why surface choices matter.
The driveway had been freshly resurfaced with impermeable tarmac, leaving rainwater with nowhere to go. With the first heavy downpour, water was already ponding on the surface and spilling straight onto the pavement and into the street.
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘺? This very street had been retrofitted with a swale and some tree pits - a brilliant example of SuDS in action. But with this driveway acting as a runoff highway, all that carefully designed drainage was bypassed.
Now imagine if the homeowner had chosen permeable paving instead.
Water could have soaked through the surface into the ground below, reducing runoff and helping to recharge the soil. It’s a simple switch that can make a big difference, especially when scaled across a whole neighbourhood.
We’ve included a photo showing an example of permeable paving, so you can see how it compares.
